Jules

New York City, 1977: Jules is determined to make her one last night of freedom the night she’ll never forget (before she will be shipped off to France to marry some guy) - and she has her heart set on doing this at the world’s biggest party: the exclusive Studio 31 New Year’s Eve bash. Studio 31 is notoriously impossible to get in (having the right outfit on helps), though that isn’t Jules’ biggest issue. An upper east sider like Jules cannot be seen this far downtown, and *especially* not seen mingling in the club owned and operated by her theatrical family’s greatest enemy: the partying Montagues.

But honestly, who would know her? And can’t a girl have a little fun before she leaves for Europe? Since when did it become such a crime to flirt a little? Besides - Liza Minnelli is rumored to be in the Studio tonight! How could she miss THAT?!

New York City, พ.ศ. 2520: จูลส์ไม่ได้ขออะไรมากเลยนะ! เธอก็แค่อยากออกไปเที่ยวเหมือนคนอื่นได้บ้าง แล้วอีกไม่นานเธอก็จะถูกคุณพ่อคุณแม่จับขึ้นเครื่องบินไปยุโรปอยู่แล้ว (เพื่อไปแต่งงานกับใครก็ไม่รู้ด้วย!) จูลส์ขอหนีเที่ยวแค่คืนเดียว แล้วจะไม่ดื้ออีกเลย (สัญญา!) ไหนๆ ก็หนีเที่ยวแล้ว จูลส์ขอมาปาร์ตี้ดิสโก้ในตํานานเลยแล้วกัน Studio 31 ไม่ใช่ว่าจะเข้ามากันได้ง่ายๆ แต่คนมีความตั้งใจ (และชุดสวยๆ) อย่างจูลส์ ยังไงก็เข้าได้แหละ

แต่เมื่อได้เข้ามาแล้ว จูลส์จะต้องเจอกับปัญหาที่ใหญ่กว่าเบาน์เซอร์ข้างหน้างานเป็นร้อยเท่า: คลับนี้เป็นคลับของครอบครัวมอนทากูล ศัตรูของตระกูลจูลส์ ที่ทะเลาะกันมาตั้งแต่จูลส์จําความได้ ถ้าใครจับได้ว่าจูลส์มา น่าจะเป็นเรื่องใหญ่เลย….

The Bangkok Shakespeare Troupe were back at Soho House Bangkok for their Studio 54-themed New Year’s Eve party extravaganza. Our actors were seen interacting with Soho House guests in character (characters adapted from “Romeo and Juliet” - but in 1970’s New York City!) - complete with historical accuracy, character backstories, and surprising plot development throughout the night. What a way to kick off the year, and always such a pleasure - thank you, @sohohousebangkok and our gorgeous co-stars @gogrrrls @dragracethailand ! What an honour!!!!

คณะละครเชคสเปียร์กรุงเทพ ได้กลับมาร่วมงานกับ Soho House Bangkok อีกครั้ง กับงานจัดเลี้ยงปีใหม่ในธีม Studio 54 สุดมันส์ โดยที่นักแสดงของเราได้พูดคุยและ interact กับแขกในงาน แบบ in-character ทั้งคืน ถือเป็นครั้งแรกที่เราได้สร้างงาน immersive, site-specific theatre เลย! ตัวละครของเราได้มีการดัดแปลงมาจาก Romeo and Juliet (ในยุคดิสโก้!) และนักแสดงของเราได้พูดคุยกับแขก ด้วยความเข้าใจในบทบาทของตัวละครอย่างลึกซื้ง ความถูกต้องทางประวัติศาสตร์จริง และเนื้อเรื่องที่ได้มีการเปลี่ยนแปลงตลอดทั้งงาน

New York City, 1977: A disco queen in her heyday, Diana is back in her dancing shoes and backless dress for one night only at Studio 31’s New Year’s Eve party. You’ll spot her on the dance floor, always with a drink in hand and eyes on her little miss Jules.

No disco night is complete without a little risk; though in this case, it’s a rather big one: Studio 31 is owned and operated by the Montagues - and our Capulets cannot afford to be caught on their dance floor!

The Bangkok Shakespeare Troupe is honoured to have had our project wrap up talk at @sohohousebangkok last Monday night (December 2nd, 2024). Our founder, Marsha Niemeijer (@mooshoosha) took the velvet stage and discussed translating Shakespeare into Thai, writing her adaptation, the artistic process, the storytelling process, and the directing process. Later, she was joined by Lead Costume Designer (@piecesofparisa) as they discuss creating each costume - and the secrets that are sewn (literally and metaphorically) into the project! At the event were our team - our stage manager, assistant costume designers, consultants, and friends. Thank you to our friend and sponsor, Soho House Bangkok, for this opportunity!
